Gas Guage repair

My gas guage works fine above 1/2 tank but once it reaches 1/2 tank it doesn't go down any futher. I have a FI truck so running it low in gasoline is hard on parts. I went to the junk yard and pulled a guage out of a truck to see if it was the guage itself but it just registered 1/2 tank as well. I have searched but only found a page where the fella said he had a fix but never let us know how. So my question is, whats the best way to trouble shoot this system? My next guess was to yank the tank and see if the float was stuck and check the wires on top of the tank. Any other ideas out there? Thanks!

my '82 did that when i first got it. i waited until i thought i had about 1/4 tank, then crawled under there and kicked the tank a few times. not hard enough to damage it, but enough to knock the float loose. haven't had a problem since.

that sounds a lot easier than dropping the gas tank! Ill give it a whirl.
