Bought a '89 6.2 diesel K5. 17.3 miles to the gallon. Couldn't believe it happy day. Beats the hell out of 8-12 in any of my other ones.

ya my junker 88 crew 4x4 w/ the 6.2 was getting 14 w/o tune or anything. I was impressed seeing that is is a huge 7K sail going down the freeway

sounds like combined.

My m1009 (which i just found out was having a severe vacuum leak and thus effecting shifting) was getting around 15 city and 20 highway. TH400 and 3.08 gears with 33in tires.

EDIT - by the by, welcome to the world of diesel, now throw a turbo on that thing, get your 60hp 130lbft and 10% better fuel economy :)

Yeah thats around town and I was driving like I always drive a little in a hurry you know. I rolled em over twice i know that. I am very impressed with this thing. I don't know anything about them but the turbo sounds nice is that the sidewinder kit you speak of? How much does that run?

that is a big reason that i am planning to buy diesel blazer when my suburban gets too rusted to drive. combined i driving being gentle on the throttle seems to get about 11mpg with my 350.

theres two ways to do it,

Banks kit - $2000-$3000 - above numbers for hp/torque/fuel economy

Snipe the setup from a junkyard 6.5L TD - $? - no idea the effect on power, but probably very similar.

I just like the fact that the 6.2 has the reputation of running through a hurriance. I would have never expected it to get the mpg that it did. Mine was mostly freeway miles w/ 4.11 going about 55. I just bought it for the D60 and the no smog registration (Hate Comiefornia), never realized that the MPG would be this good. I am have attempted just to keep it.

More power, easier so the theory is if you can keep your foot out of it and stop trying to hear the turbo spool than you use less effort to do the same driving.

speed, what gears does your Blazer have? I have a '89 with the 6.2L too and mine has the 3.73's. I'm not sure on the gas mileage as the trip odo doesn't work and I've been lazy but I figure it's got to be somewhere near there. I'm really tempted to go slightly bigger with my tires and maybe bring the revs down a little.

i can see more power improving mileage if transmission does not need to downshift as much on the highway.

unless the added air and cylinder pressure resulting in a more complete burning of the fuel the turbo shouldn't improve mileage because a given amount of fuel does not produce more energy when burned in a highly pressurized cylinder than it will produce when burned at atmospheric pressure.

i am not trying to say anyone is wrong in saying that a turbo 6.2 will get better mileage, i am just trying to figure out why.

improved volumetric efficiency. Added power at any given fuel load reduces the work the engine is doing. pumping more air into the cylinder means a bigger bang when the fuel in injected, without using any more fuel. if you use less fuel for a given power output, it increases fuel economy. Reason being when you heat air it expnands. more air, more expansion, more pressure on the piston.

a turbo basically captures the energy of the hot exhaust gasses, and in a roundabout way returns that lost energy into the engine via compressed intake charge. again, more efficiency in the engine. more efficiency better mileage.
