Gas Mileage

Slightly off subject, don\'t flame me.

I am glad to hear others have experienced problems w/ GM fuel gages. My wife's 96 Grand Am is horrible when it gets under half a tank. You get in and it is at 1/4 tank, go a mile and the fuel light is on and it is on or past E. She has ran out of gas more than once. The dealer said there was nothing wrong. We just refuel it at 1/2 tank now.
We have used it on 2 cross country trips and it actually worked perfect, but not in town.

I get about 15 mpg on the first half and 6 mpg on the second half of the tank???

Hey my gauge in mine moves up really fast but shows full with 10 gallons to go but is right on when its going empty,my s10 is a 1/4 off too high so if it hits an 1/8 of a tank im pushing it (as in to a gas station).

The best way to check your gas mileage is to fill up until the pump clicks off then drive until close to empty. Then fill up at same pump until it clicks off. Divide miles by gallons to get accurate mpg. The guages are never accurate. I get 7 mpg in mine doing it this way. I will put up with paying a lot for gas in my K5 instead of driving a car. I think it is worth the extra cash to drive the vehicle I love instead of driving a car just becuase the gas cost is less.

Just an update ... Just drove about 263 miles about 90% highway and got 16 mpg going about 65 - 70 mph. I think a lot might have to do with a steady foot ... also I just changed my fuel filter before the trip (old filter had about 30,000 miles on it) ... seems like it got me an extra 1 mpg. All stock '87 350 TBI with manual transmission about 73,000 original miles.
