My fire department just took delivery of a 2012 dodge 5500 with a service bed. The purpose of this rig is to provide mechanical support to brush apparatus during large wildfire events. It will carry tools, fluids, spare parts, ect to do minor repair work and tire changes in the field.

I have been tasked to research gas powered compressors for this rig. The compressor will get started regularly but not will be used that often. It needs to have enough volume to run an impact to change tires on anything from a standard one ton chassis to a ford f-750. We are thinking 3/4 inch impact so i would say something in the 30 cfm range? Idk. We can't afford to break the bank on this but I'd really like to avoid harbor freight quality type stuff.

What say ye the brotherhood?

I haven't used a 3/4" impact, but 30 cfm sounds like it is much bigger than you would have to use. But, bigger wouldn't hurt. I have run my 1/2" 2135ti IR impact off a porter cable job site compressor (electric) that is probably 4-5 cfm at 90 psi. My 60 gal compressor is probably not more than 12 cfm and can keep up non stop with my impact with no sweat.

Years ago I used an emglo gas compressor with a honda engine for painting. It did a good job. If I bought a new compressor now, it would be an IR.

I had a 9 horse Honda powered compressor on my old service truck. it was decent. I could run my die grinders, and guns. but I also had a 20 gallon tank on the roof that it fed.

Does it have to be new? Is the fire Dept buying it, will it go out for bid?

Looking at Northern tool.

We don't have to go out for bid on small stuff like this, just for capital expenditure items.

Thanks for all of the suggestions provided thus far. I'm really starting to think that we may have to scale this project back a bit and stay around the 1k mark.

I'm thinking something like this may work for our needs.

I'm not familiar with the compressor brand but at least it has a name brand engine on it.

Dads got a puma with disc valves, working son of a gun that lives in the bed of a truck, cranked up to 165 and gets the snot beat out of it on a regular basis. They dont make them with disc valves anymore, but they finally admitted at one time they did, and were supposed to come out with some again but we never heard back from them. I dont even think dads changed the oil in it since he bought it new over ten years ago! Granted anything with those 5 horse hondas are a good running motor.
