Anyone installed a set of gas shocks like used on some cars/trucks to hold hood up but instead to assist tailgate when opening closing? Just a random thought.

Do you not have the helper springs on your tailgate? With the helpers my 79's tailgate is easy to close but if you don't have them than I understand the question because my 76 is missing the springs and is heavy when you close it.

Interesting idea. Have you looked to see if there is enough space to fit them?

Pushing up is not too tough with the helper springs as mentioned, but being able to open it and let go, not having it slam down would be kind of neat. Not really useful for me, but neat.

All the "shocks" for these types of setups are one way AFAIK, so you'd have to choose open or close.

Probably not doable on a retrofit, but a lot of those shocks do both lift and hold closed. When you close the hatch, they go "overcenter" and help close and hold it closed.
