I've had this pipe in the back on the k5 for as long as I can remember and I never knew what it was for, but I suspected it was part of the venting system. Since I switched to fuel injection, my tank wasn't vented well enough (actually not at all) and pressure was building up inside the tank.
After trying in vain to find a diagram of what this thing actually has inside it, I decided to investigate further with a
If you aren't familiar with it, the empty hole back there is where it goes.

Here's the pipe after it was removed at the top copped off.

On the bottom there are three hose fittings. Two go to the gas tank and one goes to the carb.

Another shot inside. The very small light "at the end of the tunnel" is the third vent hose fitting. I'm wondering if this hole is to allow any fuel that does get over the top of the other two to drain back down into the tank.

Upon close inspection, the two long pipes travel up to the top and have a small chamfer on the ends to presumably only allow air to escape on big inclines or after lots of fuel sloshing.

The plan is to weld it back shut and run my new vent through it. Seems like a decent way to make sure liquid fuel doesn't get into my vent and clog it.
