So I finally was able to remove the gas tank and sending unit on the k5. The tank is not as bad as I tought it was going to be. There are some small patches of rust in the tank maybe a about the sixw of dime. Not more then 5 spots.

I'm one that would alsways try to fix what I have rather then buying new.

What are your thoughts on sand blasting the tank and getting it painted? What is the cost and could I do this miydelf? I'm not sure what the process is to get all the fumes out.

This shop does the work but are not local to me.

They sell gas tank seal kits on ebay. Not sure about the blasting part. Maybe just bang it around a good bunch to get the loose stuff out. Just my $.02

have it tanked at your local radiator shop....

I think the tanks are galvanized on the inside, as much as you might hate to, consider ditching it and just getting a replacement. Steel ones were on the order of $130 when I bought mine a few years ago.

Are the rust spots on the outside? why did you pull ur tank and sending unit to begin with? if there is no problem with the tank insides id say drain it fill it with water (thats what we do when we weld tanks get rid of the fumes) and drain it you can rent sandblasters from most of the rental places but if its only a few spots i wouldn't waste the money. just get out the sander and go to town. then paint it all up. Make sure to use a good primer and paint. if theres rust in side buy a new one.

I went through the entire fuel system. Water got into the tank and the filter was clogged with junk both at the carb and sender unit.

The inside is not as bad as I thought it would be. Just a few dime sized rust spots. It still holds gas and does not leak. Just needs a good cleaning on the inside and some paint on the outside.

yes the tanks are gavalized on the outsides. What is the quality of the replacement tank?

I got a tank from LMC almost 3 years ago, because my tanks had 3 or 4 holes the size of quarters sloppily fixed by the PO. I have not had any problems with the new tank seems to be holding up just fine and I have had it out a couple times to swap the fuel pump

No, I think they are galvanized on the inside as well...I think they would tend to be a lot rustier if they weren't.

Mine was good quality, no problems with fit or anything.

The brand I'm looking at getting is a Spectra. Any thoughts on this?

I called the radiator shop and they wanted more fix the tank then it is to buy a new one. I just don't want to get any junk.
