Mine's leaking around the sending unit... :doah:
figure while it's out... replace whatever the heck is leaking...

I'm guessing there is a seal under the locking ring???

1 - Does the ring just twist off... do i bend the metal tabs...

2 - what do i seal it with.. can i get a new seal???

yes... in theory usually they are rusted and a pain to get off. you actually use the metal tabs that are sticking up as spots to line the screwdriver up with and hit it counter clockwise. for me the tabs always bend down and i end up having to just pry the thing out bending it all up

ive never had to buy a new seal by itself. i know when you buy new sending units that it comes with one. its basicly just a giant O-ring maybe you can get one at the local NAPA

The ring is "locked" under the outer ring in a cam type action. Hammer/ Screwdriver will get it off. Knock the inner ring (it may be the outer) counter clock-wise.The o-ring under it is what's leaking. Both can be gotten from the local parts house in a set or from LMC.

I found a part at rockauto acdelco part number TR11 and/or G10 ..... looks like it might work...

hmm.... (staring at tube of gasket maker)

I don't have my sending units handy, but I believe if you look closely at the top of the sender, you'll see that you don't have to hit the tabs. As I recall you can probably see where there are "slots" cut into the side of the lock ring, and you can hit those with a screwdriver.

Doesn't hurt to work from side to side, as the lock ring tends to be forced against the tank as you pound on it.

Maybe I am just really careful but I always use a wooden dowel instead of a screwdriver, no spark means no chance of me blowing up

went to autozone...

no luck.. they list a lockring kit/o-ring.. but it's not available...

course if you buy the 100 dollar sending unit, it's included...

You can use a brass drift if you like.

So far no smoldering hole that used to be me and my gas tank. :)

I've got a brand new Delco o-ring in my hand, you can have it. I'm going South on 167 at 6AM, heading North about 4:45PM. Or you can come by my place right now and get it, but I'm in Renton.

And no, you don't have to hit the tabs. Hit right at the base of them and they won't bend over.

I'm in the Seattle area also. I just removed sending unit from the tank dur to rust in the tank. It took me some time to figure it out. I got almost all the gas out of the tank first. After being very timid I eventually got a big screw driver and just started to really pound on it. Eventually it moved. My advise is to get it clean. use a pick and removed the dirt and small rocks. Then use some pb blaster spray from the auto store on it. Then get a large screw driver and start hitting it. I intend to replace it so I bent the tabs. Also it is possible to hit on another part that is more solid. First try the tabs an see what moves. I also found that once I got it going I had to hit one side and then the other side. Move around as you hit it or it will stay on one side. You got to keep rotating it to get it out.

Are you thinking about getting a new sending unit and gas tank? I've looked around and am going to go with the Spectra Premium from rockauto. I'm just waiting for the next pay check to place the order. Check the forum for a 5% of code.

The advice above from others is good.

Is your gas tank and sending unit any good? If so then I would be willing to buy it off from you. Let me know if you need any help. You might not be far and I could show you how to do this.

dyeager535 and reddog64 - all three of us have been on this forum for along time. Are there any local K5 events or gatherings? What is going on with krazyk5? There has got to be so much collective knowledge from working on these trucks it would be great to meet and share.

krazyk5 guys are goin to naches in a month :) woot woot

I live in federal way near 99/288th work on my truck in mount vernon

Come say hi on krazyk5.com!

I don't really wheel, and most of the get-togethers the local guys have involve heading out wheeling somewhere. I did hit Reider pits once, wasn't too bad. :)

We only really had two get togethers locally that I attended a few years back.

I don't mind getting together if anyone wants to. I know there are a few more of us around the south end.
