Gas Tank skid plate

I’ve got one like this I put on my 74. Installed a 31 gallon tank and it does not fit, too shallow.
Curious about the one TJ1978 bought fits the 31 tank.
IIRC the 31tanks came after 74ish.

I have 40 gal tanks fits close to bottom of tank

I had the same one in my 76 k5.
It was a gallon tank.
My 77 chalet with a 25 gallon tank had the one with no sides

We’ll see, he had a 31gal tank. Im sure I can figure something out. if it fits great, if not Ill sell it.

Was not easy.. tow hitch was in the way and the only way to get to the bolts was to remove gas tank. Thankfully three bolts came loose without having to get a wrench on the other side, thus not having to remove gas tank.. I was able to pivot tow hitch out of the way enough to get the flanges butted against bolts holes. Skid plate has some room on passenger side while drive its damn near against the gas tank. Oh well.
Isn't not an exact fit but connected enough..

Once all is done... time to replace back leaf springs and bushings

On the side it is too close you can put some spacers to lower the skid a little.

Its close to flush against it on driver side, does it really matter much? But I will try what you suggest

By Flush I mean on the side of the gas tank not the bottom. The bottom is fine. The solution would be if I could shift the gas tank to the passenger side by an 1/4 inch which seems more trouble than its worth...

There is usually a fair bit of "play" left and right in the tank, since the tank straps fit into channels stamped into the tank when it's formed. Those channels are significantly wider than the tank. Would probably have to also loosen the fill neck/vent hose to get it to move and stay moved. Also, if the tank has been in there awhile and the straps haven't been moved, the material they used between the tank and straps (looks like tar paper to me, and is what I made replacements out of) will tend to come apart.

Probably one of a few reasons GM changed the skid plate design, one less tolerance they had to worry about. lol

Going to have to try mine again with the 31 tank.
Did some research and 73-75 shield as GM calls it is a specific # and fits all but the 40 gallon tank which would be the Sub.
76-78 calls for 2 different part #. Except 40 gallon and 40 Gallon as well as 79-84.
Haven’t seen any that fit only the 25 gallon tank.
Pretty sure the shield I have is from a 78 IIRC (senior)
With the open sides.
If anyone is interested.
