I took out my fuel tank to drain the gas out of it,(had water in my fuel)I took the sender out of the tank and the sock has a hole in it, and it was folded over. How important is the sock? Can it be changed with out replacing the hole sender. THANKS. BTW the truck is a 77 .

You could run an inline filter and accomplish the same thing.
I would still run one at the carb too.

When I swapped gas tanks, I removed the sock from the tank and installed an in-line filter in addition to the carb filter. Seemed easier to change out an in-line filter than drop the tank and replace the sock if for some reason it clogs up.

Thanks guys, fixed it with a sock from a 84 diesel that is going for scrap. Next time I`ll do the in line filter trick. THANKS. I found from searching that GM #5651702 fits for a replacement, 19.00 bucks in Canada. I`M to cheep for that, plus I didn`t want to wait for a day to put the tank back in.
