What should I use as insulating material between the tank and straps? I'm sure I can order it from LMC but is there anything I can use that I might find locally?

I just did mine today and used tar paper

I thought about tar paper but wasn't sure where I could get such a small quantity. I like the bike tube idea.

I don't know much about tar papers construction, but I will say that rubber will not let water out, so if it gets in between the rubber and tank, it will be much more likely to stay there. Tar paper (which is about the consistency of what GM used) I'm guessing is not a whole lot better, so when I did mine I painted the tank where the straps ride.

i just did mine not too long ago with a car inner tube that I picked up from the local mechanic. It was a freebie (actually he gave me like 3 of 'em). I painted the tank and the straps gloss black and then cut the innertubes into two nice and straight strips and taped them onto the straps with black electrical tape (just to hold them in place). and then bolt on the straps after like you normally would

I've used tar paper before. A local restoration shop here uses tar paper, too.

If there's any roofing crews around, go ask for a small piece of some. Make sure they have 30# paper and not the 15#.

Bradley and I used tube from an old trailer tire for the Mouse, I just took it completly apart to sandblast the frame, and the tube was still there and in great shape. over 20 years...
