Soo, I am getting ready to do a TBI conversion in my jimmy. I currently have the large (34 gal?) which drags its low hanging a$$ over everything. Since I am thinking that I want to go in tank fuel pump now is the time to get something that tucks up a little better. Has anyone went EFI and used an OEM tank?

Out of what? Did it fit in the stock location? Pics?

Heath did that with his 83 Jim, he went with EZ-EFI, but used an in tank pump and factory type unit...check out his thread...

I do have my old tank laying around unused, if you can use it your welcome to it!
I was under the impression that the 1st gen frames were narrower back there so later model tanks don't fit. Of course I've been wrong about that stuff before, so take it with a grain of salt.

My eventual plan is to swap in a 6.0, so I will be watching what you come up with for sure. :thumb:

I think they are the same. The Suburban and Blazer used the same ridiculous 20 gal tank. I pulled the 20 gal tank and installed a 31 gal out of a 79 K5. It fits between the frame rails perfectly. If it fits in mine it should fit in a K5.

Thanks Dave.

My initial thought if no one has found on OEM tank for EFI (any manufacturer) that will fit. I will take some measurements off of my jimmy and then go to our local LKQ and see if I can find something close. Then see if I can verify that the OEM pump will be pressure and volume capable.

Anyone see any problems with this approach?

cool, good to know. When the time comes, I'd like to use a factory in-tank pump if possible.

as long as step 3 is 'post results here', that sounds good to me. :thumb:

I currently have the NWF tank (at least it looks like it). So whatever I go with I would like it to have a bit more ground clearance even at the expense of range.

I don't know about tbi tanks, but definitely will have to move the filler neck or change the tank. Seems like you will have the same problem (hanging low) unless you go with a custom tank and then you will probably lose capacity to keep the tank from hanging down. There isn't that much space between the body and the frame.

I believe that you can retrofit the sending unit on an older style tank to take an in-tank fuel pump.

I swapped a larger tank (31 or 36 gal) into my 71. I had to make a new cross member for the front of the tank to hang from. I like the range so going to a smaller tank isn't an option...

Tanksinc has a write up on installing an in tank pump. I was going to do the same thing, but ended up paying out the a$$ for a custom built fuel cell that is baffled with in tank pump. I also thought about using the 31 gallon tank but didnt want to cut the rear crossmember and relocate it. Here is the link to the install using your existing oem tank. Ps I have an oem tank with all the hardware and sending unit new in box i would let go for $230 shipped.
