i'm lookin at moving my gas tank. i want to make a storage compartment (ridgeline style) in where the tank normally goes. so i'm thinking about either using my blazer tank and just moving it forward on the frame to be underneath the back seat or running two pickup tanks on either side under the doors. has anybody done this? any better ideas? i'm at a point where i can still keep the stock location in case this is a stupid idea. don't be afraid to let me know if it is:rolleyes:
 
c'mon guys... don't tell me no one's done something like this...

Haven't done it but I have been thinking about adding truck saddle tanks to my suburban and I have yet to go in and take measurements, have no time. :o
 
well please let me know when you try it if it'll work. the only issue i can think of is that the tanks might hang below the rocker panels (especially with any body lift) because the floor doesn't contour the way a truck cab does, and it would look really bad. do you think moving the blazer tank forward would work?
 
I don't think moving the Blazer tank forward would work to well. If you moved it forward, it would be on top of the t-case/rear driveshaft. You would need a decent sized body lift to get the tank up enough...or cut the floor to pop the tank up through it.

A small fuel cell might fit, but it would be tight.

Sadle tanks could work, but would limit ground clearance. I don't think they would work as rock sliders either.

I think your best bet would be to run a stock tank, or small fuel cell in the stock location. Use a body lift to gain some clearance and make your storage that way.
 
This woulda been a good poll. I'm voting "dumb idea". Actually, nice idea, but don't think it will work. Hell, I got tired of sliding on my fuel tank and put it in the bed (after smashing skid plate and breaking tank strap:D). Dleroy43 had moved his 'burb tank up behind the back seat and supended it halfway through the floor. That worked OK, but limited shock mounting options. I'm not picturing a way to do this on a Blazer and still have a back seat. Maybe saddle tanks from a SB pickup, but that'll kill your ground clearance under the sides.:doah:

i don't mean THAT far forward. i should have clarified. what i'm thinking is moving it it the length of itself forward. picture the stock location, you know how there's two crossmembers that it mounts to? the back of my tank would mount off the front crossmember, i'd just weld it in backwards. if i had a tank a tank in the stock location and one where i want to move it, they would touch. so really, the new tank would be over the rear axle and the end of the driveshaft. i'm going to have a 4" suspension lift so i'll have lots of room under there, and i think my tires would eat the rear quarter long before there was enough flex for the axle to hit the tank.

so what's the concensus now? any flaws here? still a dumb idea?

Yeeeeah that won't work.
The only way to make it fit that far forward is to have a body lift.
A suspension lift will not give you enough clearance unless you put some lower bump stops, the axle will still be able to go up as high as before the lift or close to it, and the way it is stock there is barely a few inches above the axle.
Give me a couple of days to take some measurements and I will tell you what options you have, I already have been thinking about this for a few years so I exhausted lots of options in my head now I need to get up and start my measuring.:confused:
 
sure thing. some measurements of what the biggest possible dimensions in that area would be awesome. making my own tank is definitely an option so those dimensions would help a lot.
 
one problem with moving the tank forward is how the frame bends and the location of the body mounts. to get my tank out of harms way, i cut the floor out and dropped the tank in topside. now it's flush with the bottom of the frame rails, i still have a 31 gallon tank and i still can use my cargo space because of the tunnel i'm building over the top of it. definitely not a modification for everyone - but it's a great mod for me, but wouldn't help you with the storage location. ;) don't know what year your truck is - my frame is an 83, and the bends in the frame would prevent it from being moved forward. perhaps on an older frame where there weren't footwells for the rear passengers it might work?

thanks for the pictures, dleroy. this is going to be my dd though so i cant really have my tank coming up through the floor. i drew some rough plans for what i want to do and once i figure out how to put pics on this site, i'll put em up
 
okay so here's a pic of the floor i made so you all get an idea of the size of my trunk. at this point, it's just a door in the floor and it leads to nothing so i can still just seal the door and forget the idea. in case you're wondering, all the rust is just surface rust cuz that's new metal as of january but i left the truck outside full of snow (don't hate). also i put dleroy's pic up with little red arrows to show that i want to put my tank there but i don't want it to protrude up through the floor. the third pic is my plan which i drew on paint of what i think my tank should fit. i know this idea has been rejected already, but i can't grasp why i can't make this work... i'm going to have 4" lift and 1" body lift so i should have tons of room for a tank. i'm aware that suspension flexes yet the only issue would be the diff hitting it, but if i anticipate that and shape the tank accordingly i don't see any problems. anyone see some flaws here? don't be afraid to point 'em out. i think i'm going to go for this plan as opposed to the twin pickup tanks. i like how this is protected by the frame and it's just unused space otherwise plus i still get resonable weight over the axle.

It might help your clearance by pushing the rear axle back as well. You could run 56s backward and cut behind the fenderwell. It's just a thought.:dunno:
 
does anyone have some pics of what that would look like? it's definitely a good idea and if it doesn't look too bad when i have to cut the fender, i might go for it.
