Gas to Diesel Swap, making a list and checking it twice

So I've finally decided to do a swap from gas to diesel. I have a whole bunch of questions, so lets get started. Since I live in CA I need to have a motor that is the same year or newer, also in the same class. (so will i not be able to use a 6.2 from a HMMWV?) Will I have to swap my entire fuel system? Also what's this return l keep hearing about? How would I return it to the gas tank?
So far I've come up with:
6.2 or a 6.5
New gauge cluster

I have a diesel mechanic friend who can help me through the whole process, but I'd like to have everything ready for him so I don't waste his time as he is helping me for free.

Also can you straight pipe these things?

Colby also swapped diesels into gassers too.

Also, you can straight pipe anything but the 6.2L NA's sound like **** without mufflers.

I've had stockers, dual Cherry Bombs, and some unknown turbo muffler on my two 6.2L's and liked the Cherry Bombs the best. Not too loud, free flowing, but a nice bark when you stomp on it.
