What is this a symptom of? my oil smells pretty strongly of gas, is this a tuning issue, or shot rings or what??

Could be a carb problem - sending more gas into the combustion chamber than can be burned. The bad news is that this condition can quckly wash the cylinders of oil causing rapid and premature wear.

if you have a manual fuel pump it can be leaking gas into the crank case into the oil

Another for running rich. Had that problem before. Q Jets when they are ready for a rebuild are notorious for letting you know.

Bad fuel pump
dont run it to long as it will wipe out the bearings in the motor if it builds up to much. thats how i got my last truck cheep bad motor all bearings spun from gas leak in to motor.
