Gauges

This article has quite a bit of detail (and photos):

http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/interior/gauges_recessed.htm

He also has another article there dealing with the easier method, which is surface-mounting the gauges.

You can buy complete bezels in various finishes with various gauge sets already surface mounted from places like Covan's Classics (places like Summit are resellers). This ready-made solution is bound to be much easier and faster, but also more expensive, so it all depends on the thickness of your wallet.

If you want to change everything out in a single afternoon and have extra cash to burn, the ready-to-go panel would be sorely tempting.

i just went to car-part.com and got a factory replacement... with factory tach.... for $25 to my door... :wink1:

I think the biggest gauge headache for most older 4x4 owners (or should I say owners of older 4x4s) is a mechanical speedometer. With tire size and axle ratio changes, the calibration can get off true in a hurry. Replacing a mech speedo with an aftermarket, easily recalibrated, electronic speedo has a lot of advantages, if you intend your often-modified 4x4 to spend much time on the street.

automatic owners can buy the gears for the speedo that fix that..
however my speedo is wrong and I got a manual trans...so I know what you mean..
I wouldnt mind putting a electronic self one in... what kinds are reasonable that may look factory?

I just use my ipaq as a speedometer right now.... (gps)

2" sunpro gauges mech, Oil, Temp, Amp, Volts all had to be wired. Can be picked up at most auto stores about $20.
I cut the stock cluster out little tricky "used mini grinder" and some wiring for lights.
Project took about 2 days. Main PITA was gauge placement took look right with stock holes. Like I said more time than money.

But hind sight. If I had used sunpro electric gauges could have taped in to all right at gauges.
