I was out wheeling a few weeks ago and had the rig pretty muddy, out on some reclaimed strip mines. Washed it last week and the hood looked like crap. Mostly faded and water spots. Started looking for info on shining up old paint. The rest wasn’t bad For 34 year old paint. I haven’t waxed it since I picked it up 5 years ago, so I spent the majority of the weekend giving her the full spa treatment.
Bought a cheap orbital polisher at Wally World, a clay bar kit, bottle of maguirs #7 show car polish, and a can of maguirs carnauba wax. Beverage of choice for the job was a Tito’s vodka tonic with lime.
Ran a clay bar over the entire vehicle, the painted parts. Grabbed the orbital and #7 and went to work. I did not spend 15 minutes per square foot. Probably close to 15 minutes per 3 square foot. This ain’t a show truck. Once that was complete I waxed the entire vehicle, then started removing the wax.
I think it turned out decent. Some of the pics look like I missed removing the wax, but with the black paint and sunshine, the reflections and glare are deceiving. I also didn’t have the wheels/tires clean, but did clean them up and snap a few more pics after I took the first round.
It probably won’t get this treatment again, I just wanted to do it once to see how decent I could get the paint. Lots of chips and pock marks, and I would rather drive it than clean it.
