My Dodge towrig is at the dealer right now getting fixed under warranty. The Dana 80 limited slip rear is all f'ed up and it is going to need a new ring and pinion for sure and maybe a new limited slip also.

What is the process for breaking in new gears? Is there any break in for the limited slip? I am going to be installing synthetic gear oil in the diff after the break in period is over. If I remember right the break in is 500 miles correct? No synthetic till they get broken in correct? No towing for the first 500 miles correct? Thanks

I didn't. I am pretty sure the previous owner did it somehow. When I dropped the cover and found the damage there was no where near the amount of metal shaving or pieces of metal in the diff that a problem like this would have left. So that tells me the PO or the dealer found the problem, cleaned it out, and go rid of it.

One of the guys rebuilt a rear in an Explorer a couple days ago. I asked "What do we do in the dealership world when it comes to gear break in???" He just looked at me funny....
