ive gotta put in a new tranny in the K5 so i figure while its undriveable i might as well build the 14 bolt. hopefully saturday night but probably going to be starting on sunday, needs to be finished by sunday. :o im a little unprepared, as you can tell.

first off, the most important is to install the detroit. i havent run it but supposedly the gears are setup stock from GM.
so basically the order of operations is:

punch dots on the big nuts with holes in them and the bearing caps?
then unscrew them two turns on both or just one side?
then i can pull the carrier just like that?
do i need to mark the ring gear position on the carrier, or does it not matter?
i have to remove the ring gear bolts, do i need new ones?
make sure i remove all of the washers, six total if i remember right.
for the detroits outside most gears, do the smooth parts or the teeth go towards the inside?
for the long bolt to install, how long do i need to get? its pretty damn hard to compress.

im assuming installation is the reverse of removal.
where can i get some of that yellow gear paste?

then for the brake lines for the discs, is it chevelle soft lines? ill be using 84 calipers that i have. i could always get the older style if needed.

regular ol wheel studs will do the trick?

for the fitting from the T above the diff, what is the thread pitch?
then the fittings from the hard to soft lines? and then caliper threads?

i have the "big" ten bolt with 1350 yoke, i reccon i can use those same straps off that yoke?

i seriously apologize but i dont really have the time to be doing all that reading. gotta go wrench!! thank yall BIGTIME

Punch the dots on the caps for the carrier bearings, the adjusting collars stay in the housing.

You can unscrew one side, or both. It'll come out easier with less preload on the bearings. Both sides are right had thread.

Yes you should mark the ring gears spot on the carrier.

You should use new bolts. I've reused them in the past with good results (no breakage), but they should be replaced. They are a special length...so the hardware store won't have them. Try a dealer or trans shop. If you had more time, Randys Ring&Pinion has them. At the very least clean them really well with brake clean (along with the threads in the carrier) and use some red Loctite.

If you put the adjusting collars back to where they were...you shouldn't need to recheck the pattern. I've heard of people making some with white lithium grease and gear oil. Or you could try a trans shop.

I used stock front lines for my soft lines. I believe people are using Chevette lines, not Chevelle.

The wheel studs will work. However they will be short. The lugnut will only go on half way (no threads sticking out). Dually studs are longer, and will work. Good luck trying to find 16 of them though. I've been DD mine with the stock ones for 4 months without a problem.

Sorry I can't help with the other questions.

the 14 bolt should be 1410 yoke on the diff using a different strap style
they are 1350 not 1410, but do have a strap style that most part stores don't have. Best bet is the dealer but they are expensive, I grab a couple from the local junkyard whenever I am already under a truck.

Like toomany said if you mark the adjusters and put them back where they were stock you will not need to recheck the pattern. Make sure to make the mark pretty big because it is easy to loose in the gear oil that gets applied to the adjuster as you spin them around

One more thing about removing the carrier is you have to pull the shafts, may seem obvious but I tend to forget every time. I guess you will have them out anyway for the disc swap...

so i got one hub built for tomorrow and the rain had to ruin my party. its going pretty good so far, those hub snap rings got me a bit. so im here checking the gear mesh to see its good to start with, tell me what yall think. i THINK it looks OK to run. but im just basing it on old posts that ive seen.
