Not very tech but ever have the gear indicator get stuck?
Every damn truck I ever had gets stuck and then the little cable breaks. One of those small fixes that always bugs me until I get bugged enough to just fix it.
Happened the other day to the '89 so I fixed it for good.
Seems the cable was getting caught up on the plastic guide and chewing up the cable.
I pulled off the dash bezel, pulled off the tiny cable and took the smallest heat shrink tube I had and slipped it over the cable, shrunk it good and tight then put it back on. Used a little spray lube on the outside of shrink tube. Then lubed up the indicator slide as well.
Done. Slides back and forth with no hang ups and took maybe 10 minutes.

Hahahaha, jerk!
I was just fixing a "spool" to hang my wire from last night. Because that part of my instrument cluster is busted and I was just wishing I could afford a floor shifter.:D

Good tip! Mine works fine from Park to 2 but if I try to shift down to 1 it always binds up and pulls the clip on the column out of whack and then the needle gets messed up.

One more reason why I prefer manuals.

FYI someone mentioned Lokar makes a replacement cable for these things.

On my 1985 Chevy Van 30 with a TH350 I pushed the square end of a zip tie into the shifter mechanism then ran it outside the back of the indicator cover. I cut it to length and it has worked good.

Yeah maybe but they have there own laundry list of problems, Starting with they look like hammered poo in these trucks. :doah:

The B&M megashifter is a pos Ill give you that but the quick silver is a real good shifter. My truck was originaly a std so the B&M on the floor doesnt look bad at all.I dont do a hack install with my shifters and always hook up things like the newtral safety and reverse lights. It has the long shift rod so its easy to reach and sitting next to the 4wd shifter it doesnt take up any space I woud have needed anyway.

I dont like any of the aftermarket Autoshifters, with exception of the Art Carr style gated ones

I dont like having to reach down, I think they look out of place , there awkward to operate .

Its just personnel preference I've tried a few and always end up going back to a column for my Autos

You remember the B&M twist shifter from the '80s? Looked like a motorcycle grip you twisted to get into gear. I worked at a speed shop back then and the owner thought they were going be huge and bought like 50 of them.
Didn't sell one in 2 years. :haha:
