Does every one with a NV4500 run the GM lube or has any one tried some other than it?

It is important to run the correct fluid in the 4500, otherwise the syncros will wear out prematurely. The cheapest place I know of to get it is Standard Trans, ~$56/gallon (?) (I think it holds a gallon.) Or you can get raped for it at the local Chevy/Dodge dealer.

For more 4500 lube discussion than you ever wanted to hear, try searching on the tdr forums (<a target="_blank" href=http://www.tdr1.com>www.tdr1.com</a>).

I know this is what is said but the local shop that rebuilds them is not useing this any more just GL5 say that its a better lube than the gl4 that was used new, and yes they are a New Venture rebuilder.

GL5 will eat the syncros and is specifically NOT recommended for the 4500.

So much of my dreams of mud bogging with an NV 4500. You can bet I'm not getting water in $60 worth of lube.

The syncho's use some sort of composite fibre rather than brass...the GL5 eats that fibre stuff.

I have used NAPA synthetic 75-90 lube since using the NV4500. I called New Venture and spoke with their tech dept. When I asked if NAPA's lube would be OK, I was told that it would do all that GM's and Dodge's would do. I asked again if it was OK to use and his reply was "it meets all of NV's requirements but we can't authorize it". I will continue to use it, about half the price of GM's.

How often do you guys (ie the manual trans mud runners) generally change your fluid? I don't even take apart my hubs after going through water, let alone worry about the trans (auto). I did have a friend that turned his trans (727) fluid into a strawberry milkshake looking concoction out in Moab though after getting a little too deep with no extended breather hose on the tranny.

60 A CHANGE GUESS AGAIN 5.5 QUARTS AT 18.95 EACH FOR THE 4500, CANT TRUST THE SEAL TO THE 203 SO IT GETS 2.5 QUARTS AND THE 204 GET ANOTHER 2.5 OR SO. THATS ABOUT 11 QUARTS AT 19.00 EACH.

I KNOW WHAT THE BOOKS SAY ABOUT GL5 BUT THE REBUILDER WHICH IS A NV DEALER USESES IT.

Is the 4500/203 seal setup much different than the OE 4500/241 setup? Factory they run atf in the t-case and gear lube in the tranny. Feel free to run WD-40 in your trans if you want, I know what's going in mine, though.

Pete, I change my tranny oil about every two years...or whenever something breaks and it comes apart anyways.

The seal on the 241 is really 2 seals in one, the 203 uses a singel lip seal. I dont think that the WD-40 would work or were you being nasty.... It does not hurt the lube in the 4500 much if it gets atf in it. But the oil that the 4500 runs will not mix with normal 80w90 it truns to goo.
