Ok, so i wanted to search quickly to find what gear oil i need to do the front/rear dif's in my burb.

Found lots of threads about how much, which brand, fric modififer or not, etc.

What weight do i need? My manual is at home.

Is 80/90 the standard? I need to make a walmart run and can't go home to check.

I have found i need about a gallon front and a gallon rear.

Thanks guys, sorry i am search retarded.

IIRC, you should be fine with 80/90 unless you are doing a lot of towing or you live where the temps always get above 100* for long periods of time. If not a lot of towing and you live in Davis, CA you should be fine with the 80/90. Or is it the 75/90? Either way you don't need the 140 oil.

80/90 is the "old" standby, alot of people are running synthetics now and IIRC it's 75/140 I think, the synthetics have been proven to be a better choice for multiple reasons (even better mpg) I changed mine out to full syns in my DD, didn't notice any real difference, but nothing bad happened:D

The (insert brand here) is the best you can get. 80/90 weight is what you need. If you go synthetic that would be good. Your owner's manual (if you have one) will tell you the specs on all fluids in your rig.

Thanks guys. I know my owners manual, and repair manual will tell me. I now drive my 540i to work, so i am far away from any pertinent Suburban literature.

I live in Davis, but do tow alot on this truck. If synthetic is the way to go, same wt? 80/90? If walmart has it, ill buy it :)

I HATE dropping dif covers, so im thinking i am going to suck the fluid out of this one, and inspect. If there are lots of metal shavings, ill pop the cover and clean it out, otherwise, ill just fill it back up. I know there are mixed feelings on the fric modifier with teh G80, does goign with Snythetic have anything to do with whether or not you use it?

Thanks for being patient with my stupid questions :)

I drilled and tapped my diffs so i can easily and cleanly drain and fill them on the trail. I always pull the covers after I get home to inspect the gears. I thought about going synthetic, but with the amount of time my burb spends in water, synthetic would cost way too much money.

The 2 times ive tried to reseal the blazer diff cover, i have not liked the results. And if i don't find anything in the burb's but old looking gear oil, i really see no need to pull the cover. I have a sweet fluid extraction deal that will suck it out faster than i coudl possibly refil it, so that part is easy.

I used Mobil 1 synthetic in my GN and was told by Mobil that I didn't need the additive, but after a while it started clicking and I added the positraction additive and it stopped clicking. I just changed gears and after the break in period, I'm going to use Mobil 1.

The 80/90 walmart type was cheap, and it doesn't get many miles put on it. They didn't ahve snythetic in a gallon jug, so i went with the standard.

Thanks guys! I'm afraid to see what comes out of these difs....
