just noticed a wet spot on my driver side rear tire on the inside and got to looking.Gear oil is dripping from inside the brake drum. What's that about.never noticed it before. These tires have only been on less than 2 weeks,so it just started.Any help would be appreciated.

There is a seal in the end of the axle tube to keep gear oil in and dirt out. Sounds like yours is toast.

Or , a wider bearing so more of the surface rides on the unworn surface of the axle . I think they make those for this app , I remember them being called "Green" bearings .

I've heard them called repair bearings, but same deal. They move the bearing to a different spot on the axle, which keeps you from needing a new axle.

Best to pull the axleshaft first and determine if a bearing is required though, because the repair bearings I've seen incorporate the seal, and the bearing is a BEAR to get out if you don't own a slide hammer. IMO it's not a "mightaswell" if there is no obvious damage to the axleshaft or bearing.

Don't forget possibly a new axle as well depending on how badly worn the shaft is.

It just started within the last few days,so it shouldn't be to bad.I have no problem pulling it apart, but what is it I'm looking for?How far into the axel am I digging? Are we talking pulling hubs and all or just the axel shaft?

Whoa, lets stop right there and ask what axle do you have? From your response i'm now thinking you have a 14FF axle and everything we've been talking about is for a semi floating axle.

If this is a 14ff axle then you will need to pull the axle from the hub and then remove the hub/drum assembly and inspect the spindle for any signs of wear and if there is any you will need to install a speedy sleeve to correct any damage to the seal surface and then install a new seal in the hub and put it all back together.

I think you are going a little overboard there it's probebly just a seal. unless he's been riving the rig without grease the berings should be ok. but it's still hard to help if you don't know what kind of rear end he's running.

sorry forgot to mention that part.It is a 14bff rear. The furthest the truck has been driven in the last year is 20 round trip. It's just used to haul wood and had planned on putting it back on the road this week until i noticed the leak.So no,it hasn't been drien on.Matter of fact,it was sitting for nearly 2 weeks before it started leaking. If anything,I would say the seal JUST went while om it's last trip down the road while tuning the carb.

Ok, that explains alot. If the truck only moved 20 miles in a year the seal has probably stuck to the spindle and moving it tore the seal and this is why it's leaking now. In this case a new seal should cure your problem.
