14BFF, used gears, backlash was .008" prior to the job (which consisted of new carrier bearings, pinion bearings/seal/crush sleeve, and straddle bearing).

To me it looks like the pinion is too deep and need to be shimmed out (sharp edges down in the root on both sides). It's currently got a .024" shim stack which was the pre-job stack. Any experienced estimate(s) as to how much shim I should add?

I'm not too concerned about heel/toe wear placement - it looks to me like it was always driving down in the heel (I can actually see the original wear in the steel).

I'm assuming you got this all back together already?
Yup - I shimmed it out an additional .011" and the pattern edges smoothed right out. It still drives down in the heel but that doesn't bother me. It's got .009" backlash.

I've got about 250 miles on it like that with no apparent problem. I'll pop the cover again and change the oil around the 500mi mark to check it out visually.
