This is my first time setting up gears and I think pinion needs to go out a touch more. Figerd I'd post pattern and see what you guys think. Backlash varies from .004 to .009 checked in a few spots. 14BFF & 4.88's

Your pictures are very fuzzy, dark, and difficult to read. I can't really give you any advice on the pattern with those pictures.

Also, .004-.009 is a lot of variance from one side of the ring gear to the other. Were you really careful to make sure the mounting surface on the carrier was clean and didn't have any nicks? Did you press the ring gear on or draw it up with the bolts?

Sorry about pics it was getting dark and was in a hurry. The ring gear slipped right on carrier not pulled by bolts. All was clean and flat but because of BL I'm thinking about tearing back apart.
 
the drive side is hard to see because of the shadow line, but the coast side if you back up from the monitor is easier to see, but still difficult. it looks like the pinion needs to come closer to the ring gear (high on the tooth)
 
1. Take better pics
2. Pinion is too shallow as far as I can tell.
3. Tear it all apart and start over. You have something interfering with the fit of the carrier / ring gear. .004 - .009 is too much variance to even consider running it until you figure it all out.
 
You need to remove about 4 thousandths from the pinion shim to get that depth right. Pattern is deep on the coast side and shallow on the drive side, shim until they are the same.
Please pull the ring gear back off and find out why it has so much runout. Clean off any debris or burrs off the carrier and ring gear, shouldn't have any more than 2-3 thousandths runout max.

What is this about? The pattern should read the same (deep, shallow, or good) on both sides. Changing the pinion depth should change both in the same direction.
 
I would agree that the runout seems a little excessive. I wouldnt be comfotable with anything more than .004" and thats pushing it. When I setup a buddy of mines 14 bolt we had a axial runout of like .008" and a radial runout of .010". After tearing it apart multiple times with lots of cursing we found it had a bad carrier. One new carrier later and everything was good to go.
 
It may seem like the pattern should change the same direction when pinion depth is changed. The gears are cut in a way that when you move the pinion closer to the carrier the pattern gets closer to the carrier on the drive side but further away on the coast side. The opposite happens when the pinion is pulled farther away from the carrier. This is real easy to play with on a 14ff and a 9 inch because the pinion support easily unbolts to change the shim. If you get a chance play with it, you'll be scratching your head at first (like I did) but you'll be able to see that you can get the pinion depth right on the money with out pinion depth tools that only sometimes work.
 
Just got it tore down and noticed that the arrows on the inside of the carrier are not in same spot on both sides. Going by the marks I made before I pulled it apart. Should marks be pointing to the same spot ?
 
The arrows should be aligned when assembled, I would put it back together with the carrier aligned properly. Whom ever had the thing apart before probably didnt align the carrier correctly. Let us know how it goes.
 
That's what I was thinking. But looking at my marks from first break down it was 180* out. Hopefully thats it and not bad carrier.
 
OK backlash is .008 all round ring and pinion is at .025. Looks to me still high on ring. What you think ?

you need a thinner shim under the pinion still. the .025 was closer than the .030. you could try a .020 or maybe a .015 and see where it is.
