Backlash at 7'ish...maybe 7.5I'm having second thoughts about your pattern.
Here's a good explanation if you haven't already seen this.
5/1000 would push the ring gear closer to the pinion... Making the pattern deeper. If my thoughts are correct, wouldn't that REDUCE the carrier backlash with the ring gear closer to the pinion? My next step to what you have there is add 5 thou or something like that to the non ring gear side carrier bearing to put some carrier preload and potentially open up your backlash a tiny bit which might make you happier about your pattern.
OK, I think I am misunderstanding you. Let me try it this way. The carrier has a ring gear with teeth on one side and bolts on the other. You are meaning that I should add shims on the side of the carrier the teeth are facing. Thereby pushing the ring gear away from the pinion. You add shims to the non ring gear side and that will push the carrier over away from the pinion. Add them to the driver side of the housing.
Doing that can accomplish opening up the backlash and adding carrier bearing preload.
I'll give the 5/1000 add a try. Stay tuned!More backlash is what we are after. It will barely influence the pattern. But it will.
I went to Judson HSI'm near New Braunfels now. Grew up in San Antonio and spent a little time in college in San Marcos too.
OK. 5/1000 added. 3 on teeth side and 2 on ring gear bolts side. Backlash now at 8/1000 - dead on the middle of the range. Had to give 4-5 good rubber mallet hits to get carrier in. Drive side pattern looks good. Not sure about coast.Dang we weren't far at all. I was at clemens just up the highway.
This video on gear patterns is the first one I have seen that says that the pattern should be a little on the low side because the gears riding up some under acceleration.I'm having second thoughts about your pattern.
