Gear Pattern

Go back to the pic before. The last pic is too deep. Used gears you really only pay attention to the coast side. Hence why I asked what axle. If it was a front low pinion you would pay attention to the drive.

Except keep the backlash at .006

So the last pic coast is too deep and the pic before coast is better even being towards the toe.
That was adding 003 back to the pinion.

Thanks

Yes. But in the last pic you said .006 BL pic before you said .007 so run the BL down to .006 which is the bottom of the spec and go back to the shim stack in the second to last set of pics

I think It's right on,(hard to tell in pictures) sometimes getting a good pattern on a used gear set can be difficult. I look for the pattern on both the coast and drive side to be in the same location as you have done. Most people don't realize that increasing pinion depth moves the drive pattern closer to the carrier and moves the coast away from the carrier. Less pinion depth does the opposite. Your sets of pictures seem to follow what I have just described, though the pattern in a couple of pictures is a little irregular like there wasn't much load put on the gears as you ran the pattern.

Just make sure your preload is correct on the pinion and carrier bearings and you're good to go.

Thanks Guys.

Tried to use a Rubber hammer handle wedged against the ring for load and was running out of compound.

I have 2 shim kits, Motive and Yukon, smallest pinion shim or thinnest shim was 005.
Same with the BL shims 005

  • Thanks for the advice. Gear Virgin.

Pics at post #9 look good. If you had a good load while taking a reading then you have a good gear pattern. I wouldn't have any problems running that setup. Nice job.
