What transmission are you running?
If you are running a 700R4 I would never use OD with 38's. You will burn up your tranny in nothing flat in OD. If you run a TH350 or TH400 then it is ok. I would still like a lower gear for those meats though. But it all depends on the $ available.

I just read your bio. It says 700R4. I would NOT run 38's with 4.10's. OD is out of the question if you do. I run 4.56's and 35's with my 700R4 and I want more gear. With 38's and OD you need 4.88's or 5.13 gears.
My 700R4 was built to have a low stall speed and be heavy duty. I won't shift into OD unless I am doing 55mph or better with 35's that only measure 33.5". With a 38 I would never have enough RPM to shift into OD. And even if you did I doubt seriously if a 305 is going to have the balls to keep those tires moving on anything beside flat ground or down hills. My transmission hunts for gears enough with the 4.56's and 35's.

An easy way to find out is divide the ring gear number by the pinion gear number. 41/10 = 4.10

i think ill get 4.56 i have a th400 to put in backed by a np205. I evenytally want to run 39.5s with a dana 60 front. Right now i think ill just run the 4.10s till i get money to re-gear this summer thanks for all the input /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif

Check out 4lo.com and they have a gear calculator so you can figure out what gears would be best with what tire size. It is easy. Just find the gears that give you the right RPM at cruise and that is what you need.

hello american freak 86. I was reading your want add for the TH400 and adaptor for the NP203. Sorry to post out of the subject, I couldn't reply there because I am not currently a paid member of CK5. I have a whole setup (TH400/NP203 w/adaptor) if your interested. Or maybe we could work something out if you want me to remove the 203 or just the chainbox and diff to save on shipping or something. It is already crated up and ready to go. Everything is there, but the trans might need a rebuild, not sure. pulled it out of a truck that didn't run.
