I don't know what my gear ratio is. I lifted the rear end up and rotated the tires 10 full turns and counted 15 3/4 turns of the drive shaft. I rotated the drive shaft 10times and counted 6 1/2 rotations of the tires. What's my gear ratio?

Is your rear locked or open/limited slip? If it is locked both tires will turn the same direction, if that is the case turn your tires 1 full revolution and count how many times the d-shaft turns. 3 3/4 would be 3.73 , a little over 4 would be 4.11's. If rear is open just lift 1 rear tire and spin it 2 full times and count d-shaft.

It's open, and I had both tires in the air. So what would the numbers be if I lifted 1 tire and rotated it twice?

Wow, that was some good advice. I might be better off buying my wifes rig already geared. I won't be spending too much time on "trails". Most of the time I'll be in sand dunes. My 95 Silverado did ok with 35's and 3.73 gearing in it's 10 bolt rear. I had a nice shift kit in it's th-350. I am new to the straight axle game as you can tell. Luckily out of all the work I've put in to it so far the only thing I've paid for is the carb. I was gonna use my taxes to fix it up, but I might just get my wife a better built k5 and wait another year on mine doing what I can, when I can.

My truck started out simple, and this snowballs REAL quick. If you feel uncomfortable with the gear swaps, keep watching Craigslist and check the wrecking yards for whole axles with the ratios you need, but setting up gears is not all that bad. If you like the rest of the K5 for your wife, do not let the axle gearing stop you.

I do have a set of 33's, but the 3.08's do worry me. I just wanted to get it running and fix it as it breaks. If I can find a better built k5 for my wife I can trailer mine and still drive hers. In a way, hers will be more of an excuse for her to paint it and "decorate" it how she wants and for me to have another rig. It's a win win I guess.:D

With any upgrades, I've always tried to avoid lengthy downtimes, so I could take the truck out whenever I had the chance. Personally, I have not followed the 'CK5' build-scheme for a K5. Nor do I subscribe to the "...building is as much or more fun as 'wheeling..." line...

X2 :pimp:

Michael, you forgot about all the cage work, body carving, rear mounted rad between dzus fastened bedsides, right above the swanky 20 gall foam filled fuel cell.

And leaf springs...please. If you're gonna start messing with that stuff you might as well go double triangulated 4 link with Kings. Wait, why are we running sheetmetal again? ;)

You're right about the membership, I'm waiting on a bank card. I lost mine when I lived in San Diego. Hanford is about 5 hours north of SD. I don't need 35's, I have a set on 15x10 M/T Classic II's and a set of 33's with 16x8's. Thanks for the advice on the axles, I was just talking them over with my wife. Right now they might be on hold so we can get another k-5, but my eyes are always open!
