I also run 5.86's (w/ 43's). I went with 5.86 because it still has decent tooth contact compared to 6.17+ (iirc, 3 vs 2?). As for the small pinion, yeah it's small but so were my 5.13's. It's all relative.
Mine could use gear changes, but I think I will wait for a Dana 60 front instead of the hub shredding 10 bolt. 5.38 I think would work well for me, 350 TBI, 400, 203/205?
i am running 4:56s with the same.. smc465/np205 and it works.. but i havent really wheeled much.. typical trail riding but these work for me... but with 40" hawgs...
5.13s will be fine seeing as how the 4.56s were working pretty good. just needed a little extra gear, and planned on having stuff apart anyway.
I have heard of several broken 5.38 60 pinions from local guys here so I guess that kept me from "going big". Have to err on the side of too strong with this truck as breakage could mean a days walk (on snow) just to get to cell service. One of these days I will get some pictures posted up of how this suburban gets used.
