You need to post a lot more information about your truck.

engine
trans
tire size
what you want to use it for?
etc.

sbc 350 old and underpowered
th350 with a np203
33in fo daily use 42 for the mud
its my daily driver/ weekend mud toy
the 3.73 arent much of a difference between the 3.08 i think. but with the np203 even in low its not that great in the mud. is it worth going back to the 3.73?

Are you seriously swapping between 33s and 42s?

haha if this is true, i think what rich was getting at is that that is a huge range, its going to be hard to put a rear end gear in that can satisfy both of these tire sizes, especially with no OD.

Buy some military one tons. 4.56 gears and a rear locker. Best of both worlds. Seriously running 42s on the weekend even in mud is crazy. I'm surprised they are living still. If you go To the 3.73 it will be much better than the 3.08. It's a 20 percent difference in gearing. So it will give you that much more
Power to the wheels.

You're not going to find a gear that will adequately cover both of those tires, since that is a pretty huge size disparity.

Opinions vary, but 4.10's with 33's and an OD has worked well for me. With no OD, 3.73 should work okay. A 3.08 really isn't enough gear for anything beyond a stock 31.

To make 42's work, you'll need a gear that is pretty low (numerically high) Anything that is going to turn 42's with a tired 350 and not burn up the tranny is going to be way too much gear for the street on 33's. That's why typically trucks with tires that big are dedicated mud trucks, or don't swap tires. I too am surprised that the transmission and axles are still alive.

A set of 4.56 tons could work, and give you the axle strength necessary for 42's. You still have the issue of not really being enough gear for 42's and too much for 33's without an OD. Maybe if you downsize your weekend tire, like to a 37 or so (think cheap humvee tires), the 4.56 axle could work a bit better. 37 is also pretty manageable for street use as well, so could potentially save you the hassle of swapping tires. Or sell some parts and get a cheap beater to drive daily. Just some ideas.

Like others said going from 33" to 42" is gonna be tough.

Im running 33" with 700r and 4:10s, its the perfect combo for me, I can DD and wheel the truck with no problems.

you need to be in the 4:56 / 5:13 / 5:38 / 6:17 gear range with 42+ size tires....

I'd be suprised if you could even spin those 42's in low range in the mud with 3:08's....
