gear swap

i am truely broke now, trying to goto college, paying ofr gas and insurense, now, i know this question has probably been raised a thousand time, but truely how hard is a do it yourself gear swap, i have a 12 bolt and a dana 44 wih 3.08's and i wanna swap to either 3.73's or 4.10's, now i know you need feeler gauges and stuff, but is it basically impossible and a waste of time of me to even try or what, my buddy had a car lift so that would make it somewhat easier to get under it not that i cant already walk under it now but anyway, just wondering.
