Is this worth it or am I better off just getting some 1 ton 8 stud diffs? I am not planning on any rock climbing just wheeling on some soft sand and mud bogging/sand dragging.
Are you or do you anticipate breaking the axles you have? That's really what it comes down to, and I don't have first hand experience with stock axles in the sand.
I know that JDNobodi on here has been running 6 lug (d44, 14sf) with nearly 1,000hp (you read right) and 33" paddle tires at all corners for his sand drag K5 and has not had the need to go with bigger 8 lug stuff. Here is his build thread: http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=213085
You can get away with a whole lot more tire in relation to axle strength when the chance of fully hooking up is low. The odds of transmitting all of your engines power to the ground without breaking traction in sand or mud is slim compared to rockcrawling, so 1 tons would be overrated and an unnecessary expense.
So long as you are not working with a govloc 10bolt, I think regearing would be worthwhile.
