Im putting 38" Tires on my 91 Fullsize blazer and was wondering what gears everyone recommends? Ill have it mainly on the road and sometimes off road and also still be able to tow stuff.

If you don't plan on ever running a smaller tire than 38's i would go with 5.13's or 5.38's.

Is the strength of the gear really that big of a deal with the 5:13 or 5.38 on the stock axles?

the 700 trans has a low first gear ratio so 4.56's should be plenty with a 10b and 38's

It won't stay in overdrive unless it's going downhill with a tailwind on 38s and 4.56s. I had voted for 4.88 only because it's mostly street use. I was leaning toward 5.13s if it was more for wheeling. Don't you guys love how we all agree so quickly?:D

The pinion gear gets very small and very little tooth contact when you get to those ratios. Stock 1/2 ton axles don't like 38s anyway. Worse yet, it gets hard to stop that big a tire with stock 1/2 ton brakes.

I was going to upgrade to the Hydroboost Brakes. That should help alot with the brakes right?

should help with extra pressure but you'll still be stopping with just 1/2 ton brakes. If you really want to increase your stopping power you will need to either upgrade your existing braking system with use of aftermarket parts or swap in 1 ton running gear with the big brakes already on there.

Your street use will probably like the 4.88 or 5.13 gears the best especially since you have an overdrive transmission.

Damn this thread makes me want O/D in my burban im runnen 3.73s on 33s and im whinen at 65 on the freeway! but with the built 454 it is plenty gear, I climb hills never needed to put the rig in 4lo, still crawls up anything

I have 39.5 swampers and 4.10's for now. It will move but not fast and it never needs OD. The cc had 4.56's and 35's with the 4L80E and was not bad. It was used for towing & dd use. I am waiting to put 5.13's in the blazer since I will probably go to 42's in a few years. If you keep the 1/2 ton stuff do a disk swap in the rear. Stopping them is hard.
