plan on welding the rear and open front for now.

4.56.... Thats what i run. I have 37's and its just right. speedometer is accurate aswell..BUT..i have a 700r4 trans. You could prob. get away with 4.10s since you have a 383 and no overdrive and not kill the gas mileage if you drive on the street much.

What gears do you have now? Would you say you spend more time over 55mph or under 55 mph? Also, can you live with driving slower on the freeway?

no freeways at all, only pavenment would be back roads to the mountains.. running stock gears now

Stock gears could be 3.73, 4.10s or even 4.56, so I think that would be the first step. Find out what exactly you have now.

For street driving, 3.73 for highway performance and 4.10 for all around.

I ran 37's with 4.56 gears and an SM465 (the manual trans runs a couple hundred RPM lower than your auto because of torque converter slip) and it screamed on the highway, ~3000 RPM@70mph. It worked and didn't hurt anything, but pretty deep for optimal economy.

For all out performance, 5.38's are available.

If you're staying under 55 on back road I'd put in 4.56 gears. Will give you better off road performance and keep ya around 2200-2500 at 55 mph. I have 410 and don't go over 60 and I'm under 2800 so that should work perfect for what you do.
