Gearz, What ratio and Installation

Hey guys im currently running 36in iroks and i want to go a little bigger when i get my 14bff in. I am not sure what gear ratio to go to but i want to go low. This truck sees a highway about once every other week and it is my dd. I would say i drive it 15 miles a day just going to school and work. I want to go to around the 37-38.5 range, so what should i gear down to? I will be running a 10 bolt up front.

Also on a similar subject who all here has done their own gears. I think it is a good oppourtunity to learn while my 14bff is sitting in the garage and i wont be out of a car for any amount of time. I know it is a really detailed install but i dont want to be held at the mercy of 4wp's install fees either. All i have ever done to a diff is drain the fluid and pop off the cover. What do you think i should do?

Thanks, and im open to all comments.

Oh and im running a 350 with a 700r4/np241

I voted 4.88's because I am not really sure how strong the pinion on the 5.13's is for the 10 bolt front. If the pinion isn't subtantially smaller on the 5.13's I would say run 5.13's. If not run 4.88's.

I have 35's with 4.56's and a 700R4 and I don't like it. It is ok, but not great, especially if you run 36"+ tires.

I'd like to have 4.88s to go with my 40s.

I think 4.88s are pushing it for pinion size on a 10 bolt. 4.56s are the last of the safe ratios. I think with 5.13s you'd run the risk of spitting teeth off the ring gear with stock shafts. With aftermarket shafts it'll probably eventually happen.

When it comes to buying new gears though I'll probably just buy 5.13s if they cost the same as 4.88s. It's a wheeling rig so if it breaks I'll just pull it apart and send the gears in to get warranteed. If it was my daily driver I'd be more worried about it.

I agree that 4.56 is the largest safe ratio for a 10 bolt. What trans or tase setup do you plan to run in the future? With a 700r4 and a np241(208), known as the poor mans doubler, you could probly get a way with 4.56. I think 4.56 and 35"-37" is the biggest you could get away with on a 10 bolt.

i wouldnt pay to swap gears in a 10b personally. if you can do it yourself cool... if not, just bite the bullet and go 60.

I just installed my 5.13s this weekend. I had an experience friend supervise me and I did the work. Its a 10bolt-14 bolt combo. Yes I know that the 10 won't hold up long but I cant find a D60. Anyway the front only cost me $129 for the gears and $30 small install kit. $199 for the 14bolt gears and $99 mast install. Like I said I saved the cost of installation doing it myself. It wasn't that bad just a little time consuming. You'll definately need a press, bearing puller, dial calipers, and a torque wrench. I really like the feel of my 5.13s and 42s. On a different note if your putting a 14bolt in for the first time, the disk brakes are a must. Those things are sweet.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I dont plan to ever get a dana 60 so i think i will go with 4:88s just to be safeR. The drums are already trashed and im looking around for some disks convos.

I think ill try the install myslef. Thanks

ideally 5.13 would be best w/ a 700, but w/ a 10b i guess 4.88. i didnt even know u could get 5.13's for a 10b.

what gears do you have now?just wondering if they are still stock running the 36's.i would go 4.88 at most and hope that the 10 bolt doesnt grenade.

With a 36 inch tire, 700r4 and 4.56 gears that will put you at about 1780 rpm in OD and about 2620 rpm in 3rd at 60 mph

With a 36 inch tire, 700r4 and 4.88 gears that will put you at about 1900 rpm in OD and about 2800 rpm in 3rd at 60 mph

With a 36 inch tire, 700r4 and 5.13 gears that will put you at about 2000 rpm in OD and about 2950 rpm in 3rd at 60 mph

These are just some rough estimates to give you an idea what the difference would be.. :thumb:
