not a big deal, first time i've done it though so kinda stoked. stripped down a donor axle and pulled the carrier, took off the ring gear, spiders and sides, and replaced with an aussie (that i drunk ordered one night a couple months back  )

couple questions tho...obviously i should replace the oil seals, gonna do ball joints too. what about spindle bearings? wheel bearings? if they look good should i just pack em and go? or since it's all apart go ahead and change them?

also, things like the carrier bearing caps, torque it down to 80lbs or just hit it with an impact wrench?

anyway, have had the blazer locked in the rear for about a year, never even been in a truck that was locked all around...can't wait to test it. this site has been beyond help!

Couple of questions for you...do you have all the crap needed to set up gears, check pinion pre-load, backlash, marking compound for wear pattern etc etc? A master install kit?

Wheel bearing can be re-used, but they should be thoroughly inspected after being run through a parts washer. Looks for any bluing, cracks, etc...if it all looks good, pack it and re-install them.

been reading up on everything i can about these types of installs for a few weeks. i marked everything as i took it apart, as i understand it as long as the shims aren't messed with everything should go back together

Unless i misunderstood you removed the carrier and stuff from the donor D44 for install into your current D44? If that's the case you have a clean sheet install to do...with used gears. Not impossible, but there is a fair bit to it and it requires some specific tools and stuff.

sorry i should have explained more. i'm keeping everything from the knuckles out, axle shafts, and steering linkage on my current axle, swapping in the housing and gears from the donor. the carrier i removed is going back in the same housing, but with an aussie...

all this started cause of a leaky front axle seal, well and the ball joints were worn. been running 3.08 gears since i had the truck and got some 3.73 axles for free. swapped out the rear last wknd
