Okay, you've seen a car or truck get a few coats of base then a few coats of clear, then it's sanded and buffed. Why is the basecoat not sanded and smoothed before the clear is applied (and then sanded)?

It can be sanded before clear, but isn't normal practice for production type paintjobs....If you sand the color, you just have to be careful not to go through to primer, but it will make your clear coats go on smoother.

So what you're saying is: same precautions as sanding the clear only; you don't want to sand it off, just even it out. It's twice as much sanding, but for a quality or show paint job, it would really make it pop?

Just wondering about it. I was watching "search and restore" and they showed the paint going on like all the other similar shows and then the sanding of the clear. I've always wondered about it, but it just reminded me and figured I'd post up here.

base is piss thin... there generally is no need to smooth it... but if you spray it straight out of the can, and need many coats for coverage, it can get a little peel..

most often the depth of the clear more than makes up for filling that... thus why many times guys will throw on an extra couple clear coats to give more for sanding.. so the clear can be sanded glass smooth...

base can be sanded.. we would do it the collision shop here and there in the above condition.. BUT your always best to put 1 or 2 coats back over the top of the sanded stuff to even it out..

it is generally not advisable to clear sanded base... sometimes sandscratches will show depending on color, etc... metallics compound the prob immensely and are much more likely to have an issue...

Most basecoats don't require sanding and as stated metallics cant be sanded. Basecoat paint is going to go on in mediun coats and dry flat. The clear will bring out the depth and shine and can we wetsanded and polished to look like glass.
