General Question. And how is everyone? Has anyone put in a Straight 6 4200 in Dually/SRW 1 Ton to 3/4 ton Pickup/SUV?

Wondering if someone had a chance of putting in a Straight 6 Atlas Vortec engine in a Dually/Single Rear Wheel , Pickup/SUV that is 1 Ton to 3/4 tons.

Along with Th400 Automatic and 3.73 gears or low.

Tires of inches of 33 to 32 inches.

We were discussing this motor a bit a month back. I have a Snowcat that the 4200 would fit well in. I was looking for swap information. Nobody had much experience other than stock applications. The engine is pretty well liked but there is not much aftermarket support. The hardest part is engine controls. @folkenheath was thinking that the Holley terminator could probably run one. It won't bolt to a th400 without an adapter.

Here is the link to the snowcat rambilng thread, bunch of good links to 4200 info in the thread.

I don't care about aftermarket support.

I rather leave it stock. Maybe add a Turbocharger?

Other than that, just overall stock.

Yeah, that's exactly what I am talking about. Leaving it stock means stock. All of it stock. Every sensor, setting, everything from the factory. If you want to change anything you can't just stay stock. The ECM won't run right with anything missing and definitely won't support a turbo.

Why put that engine in a 3/4 ton or 1 ton? Plus saddle it with a 3 speed auto?

Speaking from experience owning a trailblazer new with that engine it is no different than any other modern overhead cam engine. Power is made at a higher peak rpm than our old pushrod engines we love. Combined with a old 3 speed would be going the wrong way. I think that engine really needed a 6 speed to keep it wound up and in the torque curve. Had it do many a 4-2 downshift climbing hills because it couldn’t pull the hill in 4th or 3rd.

Not saying you can’t do it. Not sure why but it ain’t my project. So if you want to keep it stock you’d be taking a stock harness and pcm and modify to fit your truck like any other LS swap that reuses a stock harness.

A turbo is an option but then that’s not stock. A 3 or 4 bar map sensor and programming to match to deal with higher than atmospheric pressure. You’ll need to be proficient with one of the tuning programs or willing to pay someone that is.

Why put that engine in a 3/4 ton or 1 ton?

Very much agreed. Just because this is an I6 doesn't make it comparable with engines like the Ford 300. The GM 4.2 doesn't even make full HP till 6000 RPM and has VVT, which further makes it problematic for aftermarket ECMs. Even using the factory ECM and wiring harness you'd still need a reflash to disable the security/dash/VSS/rear O2/ABS/etc stuff.

If you want to talk about stuffing this in a Chevette, then I'm interested.
