I've got a '90 3/4 ton 4x4 Sub w/a SM465. It has 235/85-16s on it. I've been towing w/the idea of changing my gearing, from 3.42 to 3.73. I already have a suitable rear axle. So, this would definitely be the cheapest thing to do.

I've also been toying w/the idea of changing my gearing to 4.11 or 4.56 and then putting in a 5speed. The local yard has a 5 speed. I don't know the year, but it is in a mid 90s 1/2 ton 4x4. The price is right for the stuff. He says that it is a Getrag.

Are they worth a hoot?
Is it worth the trouble?
Would I be giving up to much strength.
Would I gain any mpg? I get 13 mpg now.

I wouldn’t touch an early Getrag 5 speed with a 10 foot pole, especially in a large rig like a Suburban. I’m not a big fan of the later NV3500 in a 4x4 either. I had one of those in a - new at the time - ’98 ½ ton Z71 that only lasted 40,000 miles when using the truck like a ¾ ton. Some people say the later NV3500’s are stronger, I ‘m not buying it. They’re perfect for an S10 or maybe a little 2wd ½ ton but have no place in a heavy 4x4 in my opinion. This is exactly the reason why GM limited them to 1/2 tons and did not offer any Getrag or NV3500 equipped truck with the Z82 towing package

I'm keeping the same sized tires. I hate the 3.42 ratio....off-road. Tis a tad bit better on the highway than 3.73.

My 3.73 and stock tires was pretty good. Would bump you up 300 rpm or so. When I went bigger tires I went 3/4 ton and 4.10 gears. Stock tires and 465 trans w no od I wouldn't go over 3.73. If you step up to next higher stock size 265 75, 3.73 would be perfect. 4.10 and a good 5 speed like later 3500 or 4500 and could do 4.56 and have best of both worlds.
