There is a shim under the pinion bearing. I put it all together with new bearings and the same shim, set the pinion nut to 0 endplay, left the old carrier bearings on and ran a test pattern. It's not bad. What do you think? I'll have to locktite the heck out of the pinion nut before I'm done.

So it was at .008 before you took it apart.I've always assumed that with a used gearset you want the spacing to be the same as previous and therefore backlash will be a little bigger than with new gears.
Nice workDid stab it back in and it's as quiet as I should have probably expected a Cadillac to be (i.e. zero noise from the rear under decel, coast, boost, etc.). So as of now I'm winning. Will have to keep an eye out for noise or weirdness and retorque all the fasteners.
