I am biting the bullet and going to get a detroit installed in the 14ff instead of welding it.

Here is what I was qouted.

Detroit-$390
Install-$165
Shipping for Detroit $20

Total $575

Sound reasonable to you guys?

I know it will hurt me now on the fundage but 2 months from now in Moab I will not even think twice about the $$$.

I guess I am looking for some "ya go ahead and get it over with" :D

Why pay to have it installed? If you can fog a mirror you can do a Detroit install on a 14 bolt FF.

I have to swap an open carrier in their also. I thought that might require me to have to set the gears back up??

Alright, I just ordered a Detroit and am going to snag an open carrier out of my Brother's 14ff. Now it should be just as simple as swapping my ring gear to his carrier and installing the Detroit? According to the write up link posted i think I can do it.

Any tips for me?? :ears:

Before you pull your current carrier check the backlash. When you install the open carrier and Detroit set the backlash the same as it was. Pinion depth shouldn't be affected by the carrier swap.

Just talked to my Brother and I am the proud owner of a spare 14ff $125 with open carrier :D

I am going to strip it for parts, what all should I take besides the open carrier, axle shafts, and diff cover
