getting an 8.1 to get high teens mpg

Dad got around 15mpg mixed with his '00 K2500 excab shortbed. Bone stock with the auto.

Like I said. Regear to 3.08s and drive it easy I bet you'll get in the 20s. All the old BOPs were 4500lbs boats with 500ftlb 455s in them and got ridiculous MPGs because of the gears. And thats no fuel injection and no overdrive.

No way will an 8.1l get into the 20s.

i wish i could get high teens out of my 6.0!

Same here.

how much was that truck if you dont mind me asking? ive been trying to sell my dmax dually and have it priced pretty low (imo) and havnt gotten to many hits. if your interested pm me. it isnt a perfect truck by far and doesnt have all the bells and wistles but it does go and get 17 to 18 in town and 20 or better on the highway.

It was 06 CCSB listed for just under 30K. If I wasn't unemployed, I would have looked at it. I have not seen that nice of a truck under 30K with that low of miles.

Derp, I meant lower numerically, as in 3.08's or so.

Wow...that's a lot of IFS lift you got there...

I've been meaning to do a sas but the darn thing rides so well even with the 44's...I don't abuse it to much when in the mud ...I am planning a swap sooner or later but the 3/4 ton gear holds up way better than a 1/2 ton...Even with the 8.1 I get around 10 mpg now...it was never that much better...I drive it to Louisiana and Texas from time to time....

in this economy you can get a lot of diesel truck for $29k.

i've been working on getting the most out of our minivan and ford escort. this is what i have done.

escort 1997 5 speed 4 door
-using mobil one 0w30 synthetic
-over inflating tires by 5 psi
-coasting, not gunning it.
-91 octane

averaging 37 mpg in town for the last 6 months. gravel roads and pavement, no faster than 55 mph. epa estimates between 28-32 mpg. on highway trips going 65 we are averaging 40+ mpg. have seen 65 twice going to denver and back from rifle.

chrysler voyager 2001 3.3l
-using mobil one 0w30 synthetic
-over inflating tires by 5 psi
-prefers 85 octane

averaged 25.5 mpg gunning it from logan, ut to rifle, co mostly 80 mph.
epa estimates between 18-22mpg

thoughts

-non agressive tires
-keeping a lower valance on your bumper help move air around it. or using a custom one that is closer to the ground helps. that's how these hybrids are getting 20+.
-belly pan to smooth out undercarriage.
-3.42 gears would help considering the torque available.
-aerodynamic fiberglass bed shell or tonneau

most performance mods shouldn't be done for mpg gains on a gas truck just not worth it. better spent elswhere.

you could get a 12v cummins w/5 speed do these things and be money ahead. not a big duramax fan, expensive complicated finicky. imo. my 2 cents

i see where you coming from, but its really more of a preference thing, i just bought an 07 so the 8.1 truck is not a need just one that i liked.

if this truck had a 6.0 in it i would have bought it in a heartbeat because its what i want. the body style i like with the interior that i want. i do a lot of traveling so i wanted comfort along with use. but i really dont need the big motor.

the dodge would be a great idea if the rest of the truck was that body style chevy lol i know im picky but thats the great thing about wanting something and not needing it, you can take your time and look for that exact truck.

i could go find a low milage diesel for under 30k but it would most likely be a plain jane work truck and im wanting the whole package. thats what caught my eye about this truck. fully loaded and low miles and a 2500hd. the only kicker is the 8.1 so im just gonna have to keep looking. that black diesel that was listed was amazing and it was priced great, it was gonna very fast too.

i took the 07 and did cold air and exhaust this last week. gonna chip it also and add air bags and a brake controler. may go a little farther into it, but as of right now the truck is doing its purpose and when the time comes that i need to haul something as heavy as the blazer then we will see how the half ton holds up.

some good trucks there, thanks for the help

just remember when buying a work model truck you can make it into what you want. my truck is everything i want. i can get right out the river from taking my boat out and not have to worry about my carpet. you can deinitley build a fully loaded truck way cheaper than you can buy one. just my .02
