well, i found out matco will give me 12K worth of tools for 5G's (master set) but wyotech isnt suppose to tell me that. Does anyone think a matco master set will be a good start for a beginning tech? I was thinking snap-on but matco is offering a lot cheaper. And im pretty broke at the moment

When you are enrolled at alot of those schools I believe that they are in with tool companies. My friend who went to UTI could get Snap-on at half price when he went to school there. My cousin spent alot of money with the Mac dealer when she went to MMI and got alot of it for well below normal price.

Good tools are good tools. If you like what they are selling and are cool with using them on a daily basis then buy them. If you aren't sold on there tools and don't like them then don't buy them. If they are a good company with a good warranty and stand behind there stuff then that is a big plus.

Snap-on is like the Cadillac of tools, and some of the other stuff is like the Chevy. Look what we all drive. We would like to have the caddy but most of us can only afford the Chevy. :D

Harley

Harley, most schools have an account with some tool company's "industrial sales division". Even the little podunk A&P school I went to did (S-O at 1/2 price).

As far as Matco, the guys I know with them like them. The only issue can be if a truck doesn't come to where you work. We don't have one any more, but I work on planes, not cars, so that might not be an issue for your field.

Cole, I have MAC, MATCO, Craftsmen and Snap-on. I think they are all quality tools when I used to wrench on bikes. I agree with Harley on the Snap-on being a little pricey like the Caddy. There is nothing wrong with the MATCO tools. Better yet if they are cheaper and you can save some $$$ I would do it!!!

thanks for the advice! Matco does offer them a little cheaper than snap on so in the overall run, going with the matco instead of snap on I will be spending a couple thousand less!

All I can say is check with your local shops, see if there is a local Matco guy. And ask if they require a teachers signature and all that for Matco?

I know in Blairsville a friend of mine ran into an issue with Mac and the School administration.

As for Matco tools, I love mine, so much so I am looking into becoming a Distributor ;)

back where im moving too i see the Matco truck around all the time, so im not too worried about finding the truck. I already got my teacher verification done so im all set

Cool, sounds good man. I always hated the Snap-On deal with Wyotech. It was retarded.

"Pick from this list only, only this many credits, this is worth this much credits, this and this." Annoyed the crap out of me.

Granted buying from the truck builds a nice relationship which can pay off. But a smoking deal is of course a smoking deal.

hey sled when you started off in the field was there a tool you thought you wouldnt need but used it all the time?

3/8" Impact. Some reason I never thought I'd need it. Used it all the freaking time, ha.

Otherwise I covered a lot of bases when I started. Bought a lot since then, but those were "as I needed them" things.

Looks like a sweet setup dude. I think you have all the good stuff you will need off the bat there. Not much in the way of Diag stuff, but you don't need tha stuff starting out.

Truly, I spent that much on Craftsman stuff when I started. I got more, but you got the majority of the important stuff there. If I could have, I'd have bought that when I had the chance. When I graduated Wyotech I didn't have my moneys in order to buy tools right away.

Ask about adding the MT2112. It is the Matco version of the Ingersoll Rand composite 3/8" impact. Sweet 3/8" gun, and comes with a 2 year warranty, where as the Craftsman, IR, and Mac guns all come with 1 year.

Also, I don't see a pickle fork set or a air hammer. Both useful tools. You will likely start as a monkey(oil changes, tire rotations) and move to brakes and chassis work before you really hit it with diag and more technical stuff. So pickle fork and air hammer will be your friend.

You will figure out quick what more you "need" or just want, and go from there. Then you can build a relationship with the tool man of your choice.

If you could save that much $$$ then do it. Just think what the leftover money could do for you. Good luck with all your endeavors, bro.

purchase was made. Should have a lot of tools come friday. Some stuff was backordered

anything you find out you don't really need, you can always trade in on the truck for the stuff you do need, and they give you full retail price. (at least snap on did for me)

well i get to open up all these tools this weekend. Wish my box wasnt backordered. Who knows when I will get that!

Welcome to the new series switch over. Guessing yours is a 4 series box?

My buddy is waiting on his 6s at the moment.

I started with a cheap torin box and a 300 and something piece craftsman tool set when i was 15, I had a piece of paper and just wrote down everything i borrowed. I just started a snap on truck account maybe a little over 2 months ago. well i pay $20 a week on a $500 bill b/c i was paying double and triple my tool bill($300 a week) so i could get my acount back to 0 and buy a snap-on cart. Having a truck account helps and also all the money you spend on tools is a tax write off. I wouldnt buy all that stuff right then. just get an account and buy a little here and there. Since you graduated from UTI they are gonna see what your made of. You will do all kinds of things, we have a UTI graduate at our shop that is a freakin idiot but he does know a little.

yes on the 4 series

Matco makes decent stuff, at more than 50% off you can't go wrong. Their new universal impact sockets are a pretty sweet design.
