So I media blasted my wheels and am using 80 grit to clean everything up before paint.

I read on here about using mineral spirits (solvent) to clean the wheel after sanding, is that right to do?

Then after words I'm gonna use some self etching primer and do a single coat (or should I do two?). Then should I use some 200 grit before I spray paint coat on?

I'm gonna do the inside and the backside in duplicolor high gloss black and the front side in napa brand argent silver. I wonder if the brand of primer would matter? Should I let it dry and use 200 grit or just wait 2 hours to tack up and recoat?

i just lightly sanded the ones i had, sprayed them with black primer, then semi-flat black and it stuck. if you want show quality finish, have fun, but they're wheels, especially if you drive offroad, they're gonna get scratched sooner or later. Touch up the scratches with a quit hit of the spray can, done :D

If I make the 83 a 4x these wheels will eventually end up on it so I'm trying for quality. I sprayed them with some rustoleum primer hopefully got it good enough. Wind was blowing like a mofo so I didn't try to be perfect just goal was no runs. When I spray the black and silver ill make sure its wind free and take my time.

Well, if you make it 4WD you won't be able to use those rims anyways...unless you can find a way to bolt up 5 lug rims to 6 lug axles. :flipoff7:

Haha, by eventually going on the 83, i ment they are 6 lug! I have two sets of decently painted 15x8 5 luggers and one nice set of 15x7 5 luggers. This is a 6 lug set thats going on the k5 for now. Primer looks good.

so far ive got the fronts and insides primered. Had one run in the paint on the wheels, so gonna probably take some 200 or maybe 220 grit over the top to rough it up before i put the argent on. im debating spraying the backside of the wheel with primer (guess i really didnt need to spray the inside of the wheel anyway).

Ideally it should all turn out pretty good! but sadly the next semi-warm day will be thursday! so ill wait to spray the black and argent till then or friday.

I scored two freebie 6 lug rally rims at the town dump's tire pile the other day!--had the trim rings and center caps still on them, along with dry rotted 235/15''s that still held air..I couldn't pass them up !-I have 5 that came on my suburban, now I have 2 extras too!..it'll cost me 5 bucks to drop the tires back off at the dump, but I feel that these rims were worth a good 30+ bucks at a swap meet without the center caps and trim rings!..they are in very decent shape,no rust ,just could use some fresh paint..

The guy working at the landfill also rolled out a 235-15" Goodyear Wrangler someone dropped off that looks near new,I couldn't find any punctures or slashes in it,so I think its a nice useable tire..might have a "lump" in the tread belts, but I wont know till I mount it and drive on it..

I scored these with trims and caps for 80 for 4 they were ding free but paint was flaking in areas and had some surface rust. After blasting had a little pitting but good enough for me!

And after painting this set, I think ill pay someone else to blast and powder coat the next ones!

Well here is the primered shot. Gonna be under 70 till thursday so ill probably paint at least the back sides and middles black on friday. Then paint the outisde last with argent silver.

Hey Kansastwister,
I re-furbed my ralleys a couple of months back i chromed the outer rim and painted my wheel white to match the body im very happy with how it came out , yours should look awsome too with all the prep you have done.I love these old ralley rims there is just something about them that makes them look cool! Good luck.

How'd you chrome the outer lip? I've always thought the rally's would look cool fully chromed, but figured it wouldn't be worth the $$$ to have it done. I love the look of rally wheels though!

Is it normal for that primer to be sucking that paint in? I put two cans worth on the back sides and it I can still see where its not quite coated enough and primers showing through. Have to buy more cans of paint so gonna have to let it sit till sunday when I have more time (if it doesn't rain). Just hoping I'm not doing something wrong.

Btw, those can guns (The spray gun attachment that clips onto spray cans) works wonders! highly recommended! the way i painted the sides was to put them on edge and then spray left to right, get the 5/8 of the wheel that was showing, rotate it around and spray whats left.

For 3 bucks those things work wonders!
