i'm not going to be putting the 3rd seat back in my suburban, my dogs will ride back there when the truck is done. so i don't really see a need for the rear a/c. i could gain some interior space and cut the amount of refrigerant it needs in half by eliminating it. so has anyone done it? i'm assuming i'll need a new headliner and perhaps a few interior trim parts. then all the a/c components under the hood would be the same as an 89 K5. did 89 suburbans even come from the factory without rear a/c?

They did come from the factory without rear air. My parents had a 88 3/4 without rear air and it sucked in the summer and that's here in jersey, would be brutal in NV without it. On really hot days, upper 90's, it would never cool the whole cabin, the front would freeze next to the vents and the second and third rows would be hot as hell. If it were me I'd leave it in your dogs will thank you for it.

I asked the same thing when i went to recharge mine. Thinking it would take some custom work, or special caps to cap it where the rear lines tap in. That, or swap to the hard front lines from a truck.

Let me know what you find!

I'm gonna look into the lines and ****, I'll let you know what I find.

The truck never had a/c back when it was my DD and that sucked ass. I'll be moving to CO in a couple years hopefully and not really sure how badly I'll need it up there. I guess its not costing anything to be there until I get the system charged and converting to R134a will cut that cost by a ton.

I guess knowing that the front only can't handle anything past the front seats kinda settles it really. I'll probably just leave it alone then.

Yeah I'm up in the air about mine also. I want to remove the AC, but like the idea of the rear heater for the cold winter wheeling trips for the kids. Almost never need AC around here. A few times in summer but thats it.

I think your just trying to convince your self you need to cut the back down and trying to plan a plan of removal.

just replace the hard lines up front...

I think it's a mistake to do it, but it can be done...just use regular pick up truck lines...:dunno:

I definitely see the reasoning to disconnect the hard lines from the rear, and reduce the refrigerant capacity. I haven't had the 3rd seat in my truck in 2 yrs, and i've got a slightly kinked line somewhere, so the rear air doesn't work well.

That being said, i would definitely not deal with removing the overhead portion of it in the back. It doesn't take up enough room that i'd do anything with it. Seems like a lot of work to gain just a touch of overhead clearance...

I'm in the opposite boat I guess. The P.O. took out the rear heat and A/C from mine and I'm looking to put it back one day. If you have a tailgate, I guess rear A/C isn't needed, but for those of us with barn doors, the back can get a little stuffy. And the rear heat is a must when it's -30* outside.

I'm still gonna yank the AC portion out, but try and keep the heater.
My plastic is falling down and I just don't loke it back there

I rarely have my 3rd seat in but when I last ran my burb in Reno's summer, I turned on the rear air everytime. Mostly when my son was in his carseat in the middle seat. Seemed like to me the rear pushed more air.

did you ever pull the rear a/c out...?
