ok guys i have a 73 that is in the body shop being painted off-frame. so while im at it i want to build a 454!!!! yeay!!! so im using the blazer as a trail rig /tow rig but at the same time it will be used for mudding and messing around at the dunes! so please give me your opinions what heads should i run under 2000 please and i also have a 100 shot of happy gas im going to install too. the motor is at the machine shop a 4 bolt main!

"781" heads with the 2.19"/1.88" valves installed and the bowls blended. I would not use nitrous (too hard on engine parts) but then again that's my opinion.

well were i live the local machine shop charges almost 750 for a set of 781 rebuilt....so i rather put my money on a set of nice aluminum heads so i can get the maximum power i can get. i have a set of paddels for the rear so i need all the power i can get.

what kind of rpm range you plan on using? Those rect. port heads don't really do much over the Good Oval ports (the 781's Scott recommended)till you get up to 6K and above. And if you can get a set of them ready to bolt on with the mods Scott recommended I would jump on em.

I think the aluminum would be great for the weight savings, but I think the 781's might be the best bet if you plan to do all those things with the truck. Beside Im not sure how well alot of the aftermarket aluminum heads would work in a truck, when being designed for a 3000 lb car being run at a dragstrip.

Well, you can buy a set of aluminum AFR heads but those will set you back about $3300.00.

If you can get the "781's" built as i described for $750.00 i would jump all over that in a heartbeat.

well i would be in the sand often since this would be my glamis party truck.. so i was just thinking a set of aluminum high performance heads would be best. since im trying to squeeze as much power as i can from the stock bottom end other than the pistons

Actually all things being exactly equal. Iron heads will make more power than aluminum heads. Aluminum main advantage is weight savings.
60 pounds or so weight saved aint going to make a lick of difference in a 5000 Lb truck.
My opinion is go with Iron heads.

2 words fuel injection

That is all

Well not really, build the motor as a system aluminum heads won't work worth a dang unless you have a decent ignition system, for that matter a set of 781s won't either. Good ignition, good cooling, good exhaust, good motor, good induction= a great motor. take one of those things out and the motor will not realize its full potential

ok scratch the aluminum heads then i just want to see what set of aftermarket heads i can install that will give me the best power and reliablity for under 2000

I would not waste my money on aftermarket heads for a BBC when the "781" heads are a factory head that will flow just as good if not better than most aftermarket iron heads AFTER the large valves and bowl blending have been done AND without spending a ton of cash on them. :deal:

You can get a reman set of those for $550 shipped from ebay, im thinking when I swap the cam in my 396 i may go with a set of those heads too.

do they have the big valves in them? I figure I'll have 6-700 in mine when ready to bolt on.
