Has anyone modified the hinge portion to something that lasts? Seems the plastic is brittle and doesn't hold up.

I had a good one for my truck build but already broke it. Would it be cheesy to use as metal door hinge?

I'm going to modify behind the box and use it to store my ecm, fuses and obd2 datalog port.

I used a piano hinge from the hardware store. There is a flange on the glove box side where the old hinge was where you could mount it.

What exactly are you doing to break them?

I've personally owned 30+ of these trucks as drivers and have probably parted over 100, can't say that I've really noticed a problem with broken glove boxes. I think I can remember maybe two that were broken out of all of them.

EDIT: After looking at your location...maybe something to do with the heat out there?

I think the heat and sunlight gets to them.

The piano hinge is the idea I was after, do you happen to have a picture?

No, but the glove box is off right now, but across town at the shop. I see if I can take a picture tomorrow.

Looks good and I bet it works well, stupid question but how do these things know how far to fold down?

I had to put a piano type hinge on my '79 Bonanza's glove box door..
The plastic hinge was about 2/3rds broke when I got the truck--when I went to flip the door fully open to install a CB in the A/C duct next to the glove compartment it finished it off--snap!..:doah:..
Dont know why GM couldn't have spent 59 cents for a metal hinge..

Tip--dont buy a stainless steel hinge from a flea market vendor/scrapper like I did...it was hell trying to drill holes in it !..turned a few drills orange and melted them..and they weren't "china" bits either...took a cobalt one to drill about 5 holes and it too was junk when I was done..
