Glow plug advice

I just checked two spare 60Gs that I'm pretty sure came from AutoZone, neither had 60G stamped.

I wasn't smart enough to haul them in from the shop, can't say what was stamped on them.

I decided I am not taking chances.
Researched the Bosch the @campfire suggested and decided to go with that.
And I found the big relay for the glow plugs controller to be bad so I will change it and see if I can get the stock system to work

The stock timer settings won't be very effective with Duraterm or 60G plugs. Both are slow-heating, unlike the original 9G or 13G plugs. I run mine for 4-10 seconds (depending on ambient temp). The stock 2-second time setting will take a lot of cycles to get the combustion chamber up to temperature. It's not super complicated to change the timer settings in the stock controller, and there are guides online. But I just used a button. I like being able to vary the length of the heating time, something the early 6.2 controllers did not do.

Later iterations of the controller are smarter about this, and a 6.5 controller should give a long initial pulse followed by thermostatically-controlled short pulses. But the GP temperature sensor in the head's coolant passage is still pretty isolated from the actual combustion chamber. So it's not a great feedback loop. It's really just going to cycle until the engine starts generating heat. The plugs alone won't warm an entire head and water jacket in a realistic amount of time.

Yeah the stock controller with the right resistors will give a longer glow but I guess I could just stay with the push button.

I run the Bosch GP's with my factory system. My GP timer is set at 7sec from the factory. The Bosch work perfectly with that setting and I have been running these for 2 years now with zero failures.

For any random strangers coming through this thread, that's a late-model 6.5TD glow plug controller. The early 6.2 controller revisions were set up for short cycles from the factory.

Yes correct. I figured they would read my signature, but assuming is never good. Lol

You beat me to it, I like to clarify things for future people especially if I know that he has the 6.5td
By the way I have an engine and controller from an 86 6.2, is that controller better to adapt to the Bosch gp?

I think 1986 would be a second-iteration GP controller, still set up for fast plugs. Ask the almighty interwebz. If you don't like the internet answer, I can trudge out to da barn to get my diesel engine service manual for a more authoritative (and detailed) answer.

But I'm not putting on my snowsuit until you're stumped. :wink1:

:haha:

No need.
Just a quick answer, I got it.
I am fine with a push button, I just was thinking if anyone else had to drive it, easier than explaining it to them.
At least I shouldn't have to worry about the Bosch swelling on me.
I just saw they got here, I will check on them
