My glow plug indicator will not light up at the dash, glow plug relay works if I add 12 V external power. Not seeming to get power from glow plug controller unit. I can start the diesel by shorting out the gp relay for about 10 seconds then starting the Jimmy right away. Any suggestions. Has anybody else seen this problem. Do I just get a new gp controller. I just did a head job on this vehicle, I wonder if I didn't hook up one of the wire to the gp controller, or its damage and I need to replace. Does it get it input to work from coolant temperature?

The GP controller is coolant temp dependant. If you just worked on that area, I'd go back looking for wires you forgot to plug in all the way. It is possible the controller quit at the same time you were working on the head, but not likely.

Definitely check the coolant temp sensor (believe there are two engine temp sensors, the one for the GP is on the top front area of the engine if I remember correctly). I had the same issues several years ago as the temp sensor failed high and thus never let the GP's turn on. I don't have my Chilton's manual at work, but there is a simply check to see if it's working correctly, and a complete easy diagnostic tree you can follow.
